The highlight of our Old Weston 1940s Theme Day was a flypast by the Red Arrows Display Team.
Formed in 1965, the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (or Red Arrows) is now based in Lincolnshire. During the summer months they attend a number of airshows and events where they put on displays of their skills in low level formation flying.
Carol was able to capture the flypast on her video camera, and Andrew Brown took a wonderful photograph as they flew over.
The eagle eyed among you may have noticed that there are 10 Hawk T1 planes in the photo and video above. The tenth, flown by Red 10, is a reserve plane in case something happens to one of the others. The pilot of this plane does not take part in the displays as there are only ever 9 pilots in the team at any one time, with no reserve. So what happens if someone goes sick? There are only 8 planes in the display that day! This means they will not be able to perform their signature "diamond nine formation" on that occasion.
The Red Arrows Display Team is an important part of the RAF's recruitment drive. Many people have joined up after watching a display and talking to the team members.
We were delighted that they were able to add to their presence to our special day,
